DIY Personalized Spring Tulip Wreath

It’s officially Spring! With the warm weather we’ve been having over the past couple of weeks, it feels like Spring came early. Especially because we typically get some freak snow storms in March or April, and sometimes even into May. I hate to say that and jinx my luck, because I’m almost sure we’re not in the clear yet. Even so, we’ve already had some beautiful days that just begged for porch sitting, sun soaking, and beer drinking – so I’m taking advantage whenever I can, even if only for a half hour after work. And look! We have tulips coming up.

This type of weather also seems to inspire things like spring cleaning. I have lots of to-dos that could fall into the spring cleaning category, but with temperatures in the 70s over the weekend, who wants to be inside cleaning?! So I found the discipline to spend about 20 minutes last week dusting the wooden blinds in our living room, and then decided to reward myself this weekend with something fun like a new wreath to brighten up the front door! Baby steps, ok? I have a fall-ish wreath that I made two years ago that has admittedly lived on the front door for about the past 6 months. So even though I had been thinking about making a Spring wreath for awhile, I can’t take full creative credit for this one. I saw a post from Life Love Larson last week, with a tulip wreath that was so beautiful that I had to make my own! I decided to change it up just slightly and add a monogram initial – to show off my newly acquired last name.

Tulip wreath supplies

Materials:

  • Grapevine wreath – regularly $4.99 at Michaels. I found both a 15% off entire purchase coupon online that included sale items, as well as a 40% off a single item coupon. When I asked the clerk to scan the 15% off coupon, she did and then told me that it wouldn’t work because it was only valid from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday – and I was there too early. So I asked if I could use the 40% coupon, which she also scanned. To her surprise, both coupons ended up applying to the purchase even though I was outside of the time frame for one. So it never hurts to try multiple coupons, the more the merrier!
  • (8) tulip bunches – regularly $3.99 each, these were 40% off last weekend, so $2.39 each before the additional 15% off.
  • Wooden initial – $2.99
  • Ribbon – $4.99

Total cost rang up to $29.

Already had on hand:

  • Wire cutters
  • Green floral wire

This is a super simple project, and you don’t really have to follow any specific rules. First, you will cut each “branch” of tulips from the main stem that holds each bunch together. I cut mine pretty close to the bottom of the stem so that I could weave and secure each one into the wreath.

Then you will start sticking your branches randomly into the wreath. I would do this and then turn the wreath over to see if you need to tuck the end of the stem back into the wreath if it’s poking out. I started with white, then yellow, and finally coral, but you can use all of your colors at the same time and just spread them out as you see fit.

Because I chose not to fill the wreath in with tulips all the way around, I decided to angle the tulips down in the same direction for about 2/3 of the wreath, and then angle them in the opposite direction along the top. I think it gives it some nice dimension. Reagan thinks so too.

Once I had all of my flowers secured, I wrapped my ribbon around the wreath at the top and tied a bow.

The final step was to cut a piece of floral wire, wrap it a few times around my letter, and stick this through the wreath and twist to secure at the back.

It just love how this turned out. It really brightens things up, and I can sit and admire it while I drink my afternoon porch beer. I’ll get to cleaning later.

  1. This is lovely. I used some similar flowers for a grapevine wreath I made for Easter. I love all the colors you’ve included.
